The title of this chapter points to its theme, essentially can everyone access the information. Access and ADA compliance in online courses is becoming a "hot topic" for good reason. I like that Nielsen tied this chapter to the OWI Principles and Practices because the overarching principle is access for all in OWI.

Two people in my family are dyslexic, so I take issues of access seriously and to heart. I find it interesting how broadly she defines learning disabilities, including ADD and ADHD and this makes me think about chapter 5 and the discussion of learning styles because it raises the bar again for creating an accessible class that meets the learning styles and preferences of all students in order to be inclusive as possible.

I like what Nielsen notes at the end of her chapter: "Ensuring that students have complete access to course material in the online classroom is an important step in online writing instruction. Because the online classroom is so dependent upon both visual and verbal texts, some students may not be able to use, see, or even understand different course materials" (103).

Again, I'm reminded of Coombs' book about making online courses accessible because one of the main arguments is making the playing field level. There are so many ways instructors can make a concentrated effort to meet the needs of all students and ensure that the playing field is leveled from the get go.

I do think this is an area of OWI that needs more research and it would be neat to do some sort of long term study on how those with disabilities access and interact with their online course material.

What are some of the ways you make your course accessible?

How are you dealing with closed captions for the videos you're making for your online courses?
