Professional Development

Here we've gathered resources for professional development. This section includes resources for finding jobs, continuing education, attending conferences, publishing your ideas in academic journals, and navigating the challenges of being contingent faculty.

Development as an online instructor or administrator is an ongoing process. Many online instructors will find themselves refining and re-developing their practices and approaches to their OWCs as they gain more skills and knowledge through teaching. There are so many text-based resources available (articles, books, etc.), but there are also conferences, programs, certificates,  and enrichment classes that can help.

Here are just a few of the professional development resources available to online writing instructors.

We'd love to have more resources here so if you have suggestions please send them via Connect

UALR offers a graduate certificate in online writing instruction. Students can complete the certificate in three ways:
  • As a concentration in the M.A. in Professional and Technical Writing,
  • As a stand-alone, 9-month program (9 hours per term) or
  • One course at a time (finish in roughly two years).

Old Dominion University

ODU offers the option for individuals to take a course (as a non-degree seeking student) on how to teach writing online.

In English 724, Online Writing Instruction students will learn how to negotiate the intersection between online instruction and writing pedagogy by exploring and interrogating the ways that various means of course mediation shapes the literacy pedagogy an instructor can develop.
